We had dinner at Cafe Mosaico in an old house high up on a hill overlooking Old Quito. The view from Cafe Mosaico is excellent. Here is a view of Old Quito and El Panecillo just after dusk as the lights came on.

La Compania de Jesus is often called the most beautiful church in Ecuador. Seven tons of gold supposedly ended up on the ceiling, walls, and altars of La Compania de Jesus, which was built by the Jesuits between 1605 and 1650. The Church of The Compania of Jesus in Quito has been catalogued by UNESCO among the hundred most important World Heritage Site Monuments in the world.

La Mitad del Mundo (the middle of the world), located 22km north of Quito at 2483m, is a large monument built in 1979 on the equator. This is the place where Charles-Marie de la Condamine made the measurements in 1736 showing this was indeed the equatorial line. His expedition’s measurements gave rise to the metric system and proved that the world is not perfectly round, but that it bulges at the equator. Leading up to the monument are busts of la Condamine’s expedition members.

When Ecuador's most famous contemporary artist Oswaldo Guayasamin (1919-1999) died, he was building Capilla del Hombre (Chapel of Man), a chapel dedicated to humanity and one of the most important works of art in South America. The two-storied gallery is a memorial to the suffering of the oppressed and victims of war and torture, and a celebration of Latin American identity and the positive aspects of human nature. To the left of the main entrance are a series of colourful paintings called Rostros de America (1997-9)

Quito, Ecuador

Please see separate sections on Cotopaxi and Chimborazo and Galapagos Islands.

Ecuador gets its name from the fact that it straddles the equator. Ecuador is probably most famous for the Galapagos Islands about 965km west of the mainland in the Pacific Ocean. The capital is Quito (2800m), the second highest capital in the world. The largest city and port is Guayaquil.

After nearly 300 years of Spanish colonization, Ecuador gained its independence in 1830. Ecuador's population is ethnically diverse with about 65% of Mestizos, the mixed descendants of Spanish colonists and indigenous Native Americans, 25% Native Americans, and 7% unmixed descendants of early Spanish colonists. Approximately 95% of Ecuadorians are Roman Catholic. Ecuador adopted the United States dollar (USD) as its currency in 2000.
